Heat Treated Pallets Importance in the Supply Chain
Heat treated pallets protect the environment from invasive wood insects, are a safer option than fumigation, and are adopted by more than 100 countries and the European Union.
Heat Treated Pallets Regulation
ISPM 15 (International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) requires heat treatment of wood packaging materials like wood pallets when they are transported between countries. Wood can carry insects that are harmful to forests. Heat-treating wood pallets will kill the bugs and prevent environmental problems. The United States Department of Agriculture also provides information on ISPM 15.
Heat Treated Pallet Suppliers Certification and Licenses
The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) developed the ISPM 15 regulation. Make sure you buy pallets from a pallet supplier who has a ISPM certification number.
Countries That Require Heat Treated Pallets
There are more than 100 countries that require heat treated pallets including the European Union. Here is a list of countries that require heat treated pallets.
What Does Heat Treating Pallets Do?
Heat treating pallets kills harmful pests before shipping wood packaging like wood pallets to other countries. Heat treatment also reduces moisture in the wood that can lead to mold growth.
Harmful Pests in Wood Pallets
Bark beetles, bark borers, larvae, parasites, and termites can spread to forests and cause serious environmental damage. There are many other types of pests that can be living in the wood.
Specifications for Heat Treated Pallets
Heat treated pallets are heated at a minimum of 133 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Any wood that is greater than 6mm must be heat treated. Wood packaging must also be debarked or the bark must be removed from the wood.
ISPM 15 Marking
The stamp that is made on heat treated pallets looks like a piece of wheat with numbers and letters by it. These numbers and letters represent the country of origin, the certification number of company issuing the stamp, and code for heat treatment.
Other pallet markings can include EPAL and EUR stamps for European pallets. These are different markings than ISPM 15.
Heat Treated Pallets Are Safe
Heat treated pallets are considered safe for use since they have not had chemical applied to the wood.
Standard Size of Pallets
Any size of pallet can be heat treated. The standard size pallet is a 48-inch by 40-inch GMA pallet.
