Guidelines on How to Grade A and B Pallets for Sale

Follow these guidelines to prevent customers from returning or rejecting your pallets for sale.

A-Grade Pallet Specifications

Top and bottom deckboards must all be complete with no cracks.

Pallets should look almost new.

Wood color is bright and not weathered.

A-grade pallets should have 7 top deckboards.

Lead deckboards on top and bottom should be 6-inches to be considered a standard pallets size GMA pallet.

Top lead boards can also be 4-inches but would not be considered a GMA pallet.

A-Grade Pallet Specifications

Middle deckboards on top and bottom should be 4-inches.

Space between top deckboards should be less than 4-inches.

Top deckboards should be 75 percent hardwood

Deckboard thickness should be the same.

Nails are flush and not exposed.

A-Grade Pallet Designs

Stinger boards should be made from hardwood.

Stringers should have no cracks or damage.

Stringers should have no repairs with plates or plugs.

Stringers should be 1 3/8-inch wide.

Deckboards should be flush with the stringers.

There should be no damage to the entry points.

B-Grade Pallet Specifications

B-Grade Pallet Specifications

Top and bottom deckboards must all be complete with all cracks repaired.

Pallets look like they are usable but not new.

Wood color is darker and may be slightly weathered.

B-grade pallets should have 7 top deckboards.

Lead deckboards on top and bottom should be whole and not damaged.

Deckboards on top and bottom should be 4-inches.

Space between top deckboards should be less than 4-inches.

Deckboards can be pine or hardwood.

Deckboard thickness should be the same.

Nails are flush and not exposed.

B-Grade Pallet Design

Stinger boards are hardwood or softwood.

Stringer cracks or damage should be repaired with plates, plugs, or companion stringers.

Stringers should be 1 3/8-inch wide.

Deckboards should be flush with the stringers.

There should be no damage to the entry points.

Damaged Pallet Specifications

Damaged Pallet Specifications

Damaged pallets are not acceptable as A or B-Grade pallets.

Damaged pallets should be sold for a minimum price. (Damaged pallets typically sell for $1.00 to $2.50)

Damaged pallets have 1 or more boards that are broken are missing.

Damaged pallets look like they are not usable.

Damaged pallets can be repaired.

Broken pallets can not be repaired.

Broken pallets are torn down and used for parts.
